Narrative: On April 2, 1991, Sierra Leone’s government troops invaded Liberia and
occupied parts of Lofa County in response to a cross-border attack by rebel forces
within Liberia a few days prior. Through April, both Nigeria and Guinea sent troops
to aid Sierra Leone and more military support was solicited from the United States,
Britain, and Egypt. The West African peace-keeping force was also trying to ward off
Charles Taylor from controlling all of Liberia. Sierra Leone’s president stated that it
was time to “flush out Charles Taylor once and for all.”
