Narrative: On November 11, 1965, Zambian President Kaunda declared a state
of emergency in Zambia following Zimbabwe’s declaration of independence from
Britain. Kaunda claimed that there were white Rhodesian troops concentrated on the
Zimbabwe-Zambian border and asserted that any invasion attempt would be met with
force. On December 2, the British government announced they would be sending Brit-
ish Royal Air Force jet fighters along with airfield defensive forces to Zambia. The
Royal Air Force remained in Zambia for almost a year.
