Narrative: Major General Ahmed Saleh el-Abdi, military governor general of Iraq
and commander in chief of the Iraqi Army, received reports that a United Arab Repub-
lic (UAR) battalion took up positions near Iraqi borders. Iraqi Premier Abdel Karim
Kassem survived an assassination attempt on October 7, and Iraq accused the UAR
of planning a second assassination attempt. General Abdi seemed to insinuate that the
report of a UAR battalion near the border could serve as evidence of the UAR’s link
to the assassination attempts on Kassem.
