Narrative: China began military exercises on the Liaodong Peninsula on August
23, 1993. These were large-scale military exercises that involved all branches of
the People’s Liberation Army and were a response to tensions in the Korean Penin-
sula over American and South Korean pressure on the North Korean regime. China
threatened that they would attack if the United States and South Korea invaded North
Korea. Two months later Chinese jets responded to American forces tracking a North
Korean submarine.
