Narrative: After France surrendered to Germany in 1940, Britain began seizing
French ships in its ports and in French colonial ports in order to prevent them from
falling into German hands. In some instances, the French crews refused British
demands. At Oran, Algeria, the British sank or captured most of the French fleet sta-
tioned there. France responded by cutting diplomatic relations and participated in an
Axis attack on Gibraltar.
