Alfredo Viggiano (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, 1990) is professor of his-
tory at the Università di Padova. He is a specialist in early modern Italy,
and his publications include Lo specchio della Repubblica: Venezia e il gov-
erno delle isole Ionie nel ’700 (Verona, 1998) and Governanti e governati:
Legittimità del potere ed esercizio dell’autorità sovrana nello stato veneto
della prima età moderna (Treviso, 1993). His current work focuses on the
organization of Italian maritime power between the 17th and 18th centu-
ries and legal reforms in the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy.
Wolfgang Wolters (Frankfurt am Main, 1962) is emeritus professor of art
history at the Technische Universität Berlin. His publications include La
scultura veneziana gotica (1300–1460) (Venice, 1976), Storia e politica nei
dipinti di Palazzo Ducale (Venice, 1987), and Architettura e ornamento: La
decorazione nel Rinascimento veneziano (Sommacampagna, 2007). He cur-
rently works on Venetian architecture in context.
