Instrumental case
Endings of the instrumental singular
Masculine nouns ending in a consonant add -ом, and neuter nouns end-
ing in -o replace it by -ом. Note that the spelling rule which states that
unstressed o may not be written after ж, ч, ш, щ, ц will affect the instru-
mental ending of some of these nouns: спорт – спо�ртом; лето – ле� том; �
каранда�ш – карандашо�м; матч – ма�тчем; but врач – врачо�м.
Masculine nouns ending in -ь or -й and neuter nouns ending in -е
replace these endings by -ем, or -ём if the ending is stressed: мyзе�й –
музе�ем; врата�рь – вратарём; пла�вaние – пла�вaнием.
Neuter nouns ending in -мя take the ending -енем: и�мя – и�менем.
Nouns ending in -a in the nominative replace this by -ой in the instru-
mental or -ей if the noun is affected by the spelling rule. Nouns end-
ing in -я replace it by -ей, or -ёй if the ending is stressed. Feminine
nouns ending in –ь have the instrumental ending -ью: гимна�стикa –
гимна�стикой; гости�ница – гости�ницей; Са�шa – Са�шей;
фотогра�фия – фотогра�фией; земля� – землёй; о�сень – о�сенью;
мать – ма�терью; дочь – до�черью. (Note that all forms of мать and
дочь apart from nominative and accusative have -ep- before the ending.)
Alternative feminine instrumental endings -ою, -ею also exist.
