‘nineteen ninety two’ (lit. ‘the one thousand, nine hundred, ninety-sec-
ond year’); двухты�сячный год ‘the year two thousand’ (lit. ‘the two
thousandth year’).
To say ‘in’ a particular year use в followed by the prepositional
case of both the ordinal numeral (NB only the last element changes)
and the word год: в ты�сяча девятьсo�т девянo�сто вторo�м году�
‘in nineteen ninety two’; в двухты�сячном году� ‘in two thousand’; в
две ты�сячи восьмо�м году� ‘in 2008’. Note, however, the use of the
accusative case as an alternative to prepositional in such expres-
sions as в тpидца�тые гo�ды ‘in the thirties’. (See also Units 9, 12
and 13.)
When the month is given first, the year goes into the genitive case:
в январе� ты�сяча девятьсo�т девянo�сто вторo�го года
‘in January 1992’
пе�рвое января� ты�сяча девятьсo�т девянo�сто вторo�го года
‘the first of January 1992’
пе�рвого января� ты�сяча девятьсo�т девянo�сто вторo�го года
‘on the first of January 1992’
