Christian senior Luke
Dejager qualified for the
MHSAA Lower Peninsula
Division 1 Boys’ Swimming
and Diving Finals with a
time of 22.59 seconds in the
prelim’s of 50-yard free-
style at the OK Red
Conference Championship.
He matched that top time
in the prelim’s at the finals
Friday, March 8, at the
Oakland University
Natatorium. Dejager’s time
of 22.59 put in him a tie for
32nd-place in the qualify-
ing. The top 16 swimmers
in the race advanced to
Saturday’s championship
heats.
Dejager was the lone
state qualifier for the CLS
team this winter, and also
the lone senior on the young
Viking squad.
Dejager was a little over
half a second behind the
last of the finals qualifiers
in the prelim’s Grand Haven
junior Tracen Johnson fin-
ished his preliminary heat
in 22.04 to claim the 16th
spot in the finals.
Northville senior Phillip
Zhavoronkov won the 50
freestyle at the D1 Finals
with a time of 20.65.
Detroit Catholic Central
freshman Camren Turowski
was the runner-up in 20.
and Ann Arbor Pioneer
sophomore Henry
Baumhover was third in
20.95. Pioneer and Detroit
Catholic Central both had
two guys finish in the top
five in that race.
Catholic Central junior
Jack Szuba was fourth in
21.15 and Pioneer senior
Christopher Leuciuc fifth in
21.18. Senior Will Cheney
from Rockford, out of the
OK Red, placed sixth in
21.22.
The points picked up by
Baumhover and Leuciuc
helped their Ann Arbor
Pioneer team to another
state championship.
Pioneer took its fourth
straight MHSAA Lower
Peninsula Division 1 Boys’
Swimming and Diving
Championship with a total
of 275 points despite not
winning any single event.
Saline was second with

245 points and the Detroit
Catholic Central boys were
right behind in third with
243.5 points.
Northville placed fourth
ahead of Zeeland, 136,
West Ottawa 125, Rochester
Stoney Creek 107,
Rochester 95.5, Brighton
88 and Grandville 77 in the
top ten. The OK Red
Conference had two teams
in the top ten and two just
outside of it with
Hudsonville in 11th place
and rockford in 13th.
Rockford got first-place
points from senior diver
Julian Cardenas who won
that competition with an
overall score of 537.
points, setting a new
MHSAA L.P. Division 1
record with that score.
Turowski and Szuba
teamed with junior Adyn
Stoddard and senior Luke
Mychalowych to get a
championship for the
Detroit Catholic Central
team in the 200-yard free-
style relay with a time of 1
minute 24.61 seconds.
That Catholic Central
team also had the foursome
of Turowski, Mychalowych,
junior Roshi Turner and
senior Paddy Gerzema win
the 200-yard medley relay
in 1:32.61.
The OK Red Conference
champions from West
Ottawa closed out the
state finals with the team
of sophomore Luke
Catton, senior Joseph
Engle, senior Reese
Jungblut and senior Brody
Menghini winning the

400-yard freestyle relay
in 3:08.65., preventing a
sweep of the relays by the
Detroit Catholic Central
boys who were second in
that race right behind the
Panthers with a time of
3:09.09.
Mychalowych was the
200-yard freestyle champi-
on early in the day with a
time of 1:37.98.
Zeeland junior Owen
Stevens won the 200-yard
individual medley in
1:49.68 and later took the
500-yard freestyle in
4:27.48 – besting his state
championship times in
those races from a year
ago. Oxford senior Olin
Charnstrom won the 100-
yard freestyle in 45.
and the 100-yard back-
stroke in 48.10, also
repeating as a champion
in that event.

Hosch won the 100-yard
butterfly in 49.80 and
