dissolute monks if necessary, and to make sure that future monks followed Cluniac
customs. As well as his reforms, Odo is well known for his vita of Gerald of Aurillac,
which became a model for the holy life a layman might follow without becoming a monk,
yet acting as an important protector of monks.

ODO OF DEUIL


(d. 1162). A monk of Saint-Denis who succeeded the famous Suger as abbot in 1152.
Odo’s reputation is due mainly to his chronicle of the unsuccessful Second Crusade. He
served as chaplain to Louis VII on this expedition, and his De profectione Ludovici VII in
orientem is a firsthand account of events from the time Louis took the cross in 1146 until
he sailed from Adalia to Antioch in March 1148.

. The exterior of the church of Sainte-Croix (begun ca. 1070) in Oloron-Sainte-Marie
(Pyrénées-Atlantiques) is disappointing: the defensive-looking tower is heavy, the walls
and chevet visibly remodeled, and the doorway a ruin. The Romanesque interior,
however, is intact: nave of three bays with side aisles, short transept, apse, and two
