This index is intended to guide the user to treatments of persons, places, events,
rituals, musical works, texts, towns and cities, and other concepts discussed in the
Encyclopedia, but not included as main entries. Main entries are also listed, with further
references as required to other places in the volume where they are discussed. Major
monuments (e.g., churches and public buildings) are not usually listed individually since
they are treated in the article for the city or area where they are located; they are also
often discussed in comprehensive topical articles for time periods and/or geographical
regions. Treatises, musical works, plays, and other texts are listed by title and/or author.
Minor works (individual lyrics, hymns, fabliaux, etc.) are generally not listed.
In alphabetizing the index, particles (of, de, des, le, etc.) in names of individuals have
been ignored. Thus, Bernard of Clairvaux will appear before Bernard Délicieux and
Bernard de Soissons.
Used in conjunction with the “See also” listings at the end of each article, the index
allows the reader to explore in detail the many facets of life and thought in medieval
France.
