CHARTRES
. Originally the capital of the Carnutes, Chartres (Eure-et-Loire), called Autricum by the
Romans, was one of the main centers of Gallic Druidism. Indeed, the cathedral of Notre-
Dame was founded on the site of a Druidic sanctuary. The town was sacked on several
occasions: by the Burgundians (600), Aquitainians (743), and the Vikings (858, 963). In
1360, Edward III’s siege of Chartres was his last military action before the Treaty of
Chartres (Eure-et-Loir), plan of Notre-
Dame. After Burckhardt and Merlet.
