- Part of the book of Ben Sira (Ecclesiasticus) found at Masada. This fragment, containing
portions of Ecclesiasticus 39:27–43.30, was copied in the fi rst century bce, within a century
and a half of the book’s composition. - Masada, the great fortress and site of the mass suicide of sicarii in 74 ce. Herod’s palace is
at the northern end of the rock in the foreground. The Dead Sea is visible on the left.
