CHS seniors honored at recognition night ceremony
Caledonia High School
honored its top graduating
seniors at its senior recogni-
tion night Wednesday at the
Peter V. DeLille Fine Arts
Center.
A total of 39 graduates
received Gold Academic
awards for maintaining a 4.
cumulative grade point aver-
age or higher by the end of
the first semester of this year,
while 116 others received
Silver Academic Awards for
maintaining a cumulative
GPA of 3.5 to 3.99.
“As teachers, we know the
hard work, the late nights,
the studying and everything
we’ve done in the classroom
- what an accomplishment
this is tonight,” senior class
co-advisor Jenny Jonkman
said. “We’re thrilled to cele-
brate with you, and acknowl-
edge their efforts.”
A total of 38 students
received local scholarships
totaling $43,400, represent-
ing various organizations
and businesses in the
Caledonia community. A
total of 68 special, military
and departmental awards
were handed out to graduates
for their outstanding accom-
plishments.
Micah Nagel received two
major special awards during
the evening – the Alpha Beta
Award, given to the graduate
chosen to be the best citizen
in his class, taking into
account scholarship, sports-
manship, courtesy and coop-
eration; and the Ralph
Keating Award, presented to
the senior boy voted on by
his classmates based on his
personality and willingness
to help.
“I have found (Micah) to
be down to earth, genuine,
humble, kind, genuinely car-
ing about his community and
others around him,” teacher
Kurt Hoffman said, noting
Nagel’s leading his class-
mates in reciting the Pledge
of Allegiance at the start of
class every day.
Nagel was nominated by
his peers 21 times to be
Student of the Month during
his four years at the high
school, CHS counselor
Andrea Hilaski said.
One of the highlights of
the evening was when six
graduates received their red,
white and blue cords from
the South Kent chapter of
Blue Star Mothers, signify-
ing their plans to join the
military after graduation.
The six — Andrew Cherpes
(Army), Camden Johnson
(Army), Alex Klingensmith
(Air Force), Brody Woodwyk
(Air Force), Alexander
Rodriguez (Marines) and
Griffin Wolverton (Marines)
— received a standing ova-
tion from those inside the
Fine Arts Center. They will
wear their cords with their
caps and gowns at next
Tuesday’s commencement
exercises at Calvin
University.
