The United States was built on
the backs of enslaved people who,
despite being Americans, were not
treated as fully human.
It wasn’t until 1863 that
enslaved people were freed by the
Emancipation Proclamation but in
one small Galveston community,
the word did not reach more than
250,000 African Americans until
2,000 Union Troops arrived on June
Juneteenth, America’s second independence day, to be celebrated June 14-15

Nearly 2,000 people attended
Juneteenth Family Day last
year when there were around
70 vendors onsite. Nearly as
many are expected this year,

been freed by executive decree.
“When you think about the pre-
amble of the Constitution,” said Sam
Gray of the Battle Creek Branch of
NAACP, “it says, ‘We the people’
and that did not include us. We were
this ‘inferior’ people. Women were
inferior. Native Americans were
‘inferior’ so it speaks to the persever-
ance, the resiliency, the innovation
of us striving to do the things that
we’ve done. So celebrating this holi-
day is very, very, very important.”
Gray was referring to Juneteenth,
officially Juneteenth Independence
Day, which is a federal holiday in
the United States commemorating
the ending of slavery.
Gray co-chairs the Battle Creek
Juneteenth Family Day committee
which is hosting the local celebra-
tion June 14 and 15.
Friday, June 14 events include
the presentation of a free, indoor
movie, “Wish” starting at 7 p.m.
Washington Heights United
Methodist Church located at 153 N.
Wood Street in Battle Creek.
