“Since 2003,” said event chair
Gray, “this festival has been going
on and in 2005, this festival became
a state holiday when Gov. (Jennifer)

federal holiday so you can see how
far this has progressed and it speaks
to the resiliency of people who have
always pushed for this holiday and
how important this holiday is as it
speaks to our people.”
Gray noted that every one of every
walk of life is welcome to celebrate
Juneteenth at the family day events.
Gray said he was not aware of
Juneteenth when he was growing up
and did not learn of American’s sec-
ond independence day until former
NAACP president Roberta Cribbs
returned to Battle Creek from an
NAACP State Conference.
“Our state president gave a charge
to all of the branches to consider cel-
ebrating Juneteenth,” said Gray. “So
it was Roberta Cribbs who brought
back the idea and that’s that it’s
about is educating the community
and commemorating that day.”
Co-Chair Lynn Ward Gray said
the entire celebration is presented by
volunteers such as Deboraha Sallee
of the A. Philip Randolph Institute,
Mariama Wurie, L.E. Johnson,
Shirley Tuggle, Denise Young and
others.
“We don’t get paid to do this but

it’s so important that we don’t forget
our history,” said Ward Gray, “and
to share that history because cer-
tainly Black history is American his-
tory and we want to make sure that
people remember it. And, we want
people to have fun.”
