Mario was one of three individual


state meet qualifiers who were not


on a state-qualifying team at Bedford


Valley. He shot a round of 77.


Mario’s performance came less


than a week after he earned All-City


medalist honors by carding a round


of 74 at Marywood Golf Club in


B.C. on May 23 in a meet hosted


by Pennfield – during which coach


Tony Evans’ Harper Creek squad


won the team AC trophy (with a


team photo of HC appearing in last


week’s Shopper News edition).



  • And, the aforementioned Gull


Lake team qualified for state out


of the regional it hosted at Bedford


Valley by placing first with a score


of 302.


The other state-qualifying teams


out of the regional were second-place


Mason with 305 and third-place


Jackson Northwest with 311.

The individual medalist at the
regional was GL sophomore Max
VanderMolen, who had a 2-under-
par 70.
Also for GL at the regional, junior

Joseph Blondia had a 73, senior
Beau Carr had a 78 and junior Hank
Livingston and senior Ben Szabo had
81s.
Aside from Mario for sixth-
place HC at the regional – with the
Beavers having a team stroke total
of 325 – junior Colton Beard had an
80, junior Evan Munoz an 83, junior
Spencer Denney an 85 and freshman
Jake Schragg a no-count 89.
Note: Within hours of finishing
medalist runner-up, Harper Creek’s
Munoz helped HC’s baseball team
win the Interstate Eight Conference
championship.
And, for coach Fred Beronja’s
Pennfield Panthers at the regional


  • with PHS finishing 18th with a
    score of 487 – sophomore Nolan
    Badger had a 99, sophomore Luke
    Noffsinger a 122, Brenden Back a
    132 and junior Dakota Parsons a

    Lake in D-2, coach Dave Ouellette’s


Lakeview Spartans competed in a
D-1 regional on Wednesday, May 29
at Lincoln Golf Club in Muskegon;
and Climax-Scotts performed in
a D-4 regional at Coldwater Golf
Course on May 30.


  • At the D-1 regional at Muskegon,
    Lakeview finished 18th with a team
