Businesses give Day of Caring to Gracious Homes Juneteenth Family Day
draws large turnout for
2nd Independence Day

Families, community leaders and
elected officials were among the 3,
people who gathered to recognize
Juneteenth on Saturday, June 15 at
Claude Evans Park in Battle Creek.
From late morning to early evening,
the day’s events included live music,
basketball exhibition games, activities
for kids, more than 70 vendor booths
and free hotdogs, chips and punch.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday
in 2021. It celebrates the anniversary
of when an official order was decreed
in 1865 that proclaimed freedom for
slaves in Texas. That’s more than
two months after the Civil War ended
