and more than two years after the
Emancipation Proclamation.
The celebration kicked off for
Juneteenth Family Day with Battle
Creek area leaders being recognized
for their contributions to the com-
munity.
Also on hand, certain local, county
and state representatives presented
proclamations to commemorate the
days celebration.
And, area high school students
were featured for their Juneteenth
essays.
Sponsored by Kellogg Community
College and the Battle Creek
Coalition for Truth, Racial Healing
and Transformation, students were
asked to write about the significance
of this holiday in addressing modern
day civil rights issues.
The top contestants of the
Juneteenth Essay Awards were given
the opportunity to recite their win-
ning entries.
