eliminated 5-4 by No. 10-ranked
Lake Orion in the state semifinals at
MSU on Thursday, June 13.
And then in the D-1 championship
showdown last Saturday, Lake Orion
fell to No. 2-ranked Hudsonville 5-0.
Hudsonville finished the season with
a 38-0 record, with Lake Orion clos-
ing at 38-6.

games in East Lansing, No. 1-ranked

honorable mention Ottawa Lake-
Whiteford (29-6-1) 1-0 in D-3; and

“These girls have never been in
this spot before ... and some days
you hit and some days you don’t,
some days the ball bounces the way
you want and some days it doesn’t,
and today we just couldn’t get the
hits and the timely hits we needed to
succeed in this game,” said first-year
LHS head coach McCullough.
“Take nothing away from Waverly,
they hit in spots they needed to and
played a good game. But we are a
young team – seven of our starters
out there today are coming back
next season – so we’re going to
learn from this and we’re going to
continue to improve and we’re going
to have a good offseason as we get
ready to come back at it again next
season. All the while having fun as
we get better and better.”
In its 7-2 regional semifinal loss
to Lansing Waverly on June 8 at
K-Central, the Spartans scored both
of their runs in the second inning
via a two-run double by freshman
catcher Lezlee Smith, which plated
sophomore first baseman/pitcher
Angelia Palma and senior left fielder
Sarah Metzger.
Waverly, meanwhile, scored two
runs in the first inning, one in the
second, one in the third, two in the
fourth and one in the sixth.
