Jerry Qualls
Athens foundation awards Hall of Fame honor to Jerry Qualls
The Athens Area Community
Foundation has recognized Jerry
Qualls as this year’s Hall of Fame
recipient.
In 2012, the Athens Area
Community Foundation began recog-
nizing extraordinary Athens citizens,
said Kacie Brunner, foundation man-
ager.
She said Hall of Famers are
people who have a “high degree of
character and integrity, exhibited
outstanding achievement in academ-
ics, athletics, the arts, their field of
endeavor, or who made significant
contributions to their community.”
She added, “We couldn’t be happi-
er to recognize Jerry with the Athens
Area Community Foundation Hall of
Fame award.”
Qualls will be feted at a party
at the Athens Greenfield House
Community Center on Saturday, July
13, at 5 p.m., and he will be recog-
nized for this honor at 6 p.m.
Qualls has lived in the Village of
Athens since 1978.
He is a graduate of Lakeview High
School, Kellogg Community College
and Spring Arbor University.
He retired from the U.S. Navy
Reserves after 25 years of service,
attaining the rank of lieutenant com-
mander.
Qualls earned several medals dur-
ing his time in the Reserves and
was deployed to such places as
Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Panama,
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, England
and Kosovo.
He also has several volunteer
accomplishments:
- Coached youth T-ball for nine
years (two teams simultaneously for
five of those). - Coached youth basketball for two
years, as well as Rocket Football for
eight years (two teams simultane-
ously for two of those years). - Did stats for Athens JV and
Varsity Football for five years. - Worked shot put and discus
events for Athens Track for six
years. - Member of Athens Athletic
Boosters for eight years, serving as
treasurer for four.
- Purchased and stocked concession
stand supplies. - Cub Scout leader.
- Worked with the Athens Youth
Council tapping trees and collecting
sap for maple syrup. - Participates in the MDOT
Highway cleanup program. - Serves on the Village of Athens
Council as a trustee and has served
on several committees.
Qualls also wrote grants for the
Village of Athens, resulting in a new
parking lot for John Wilson Park, as
well as other park improvements.
He serves on the Athens Area
Community Foundation Board, and
is a member of North Athens Baptist
Church, where he has served on the
Deacon Board, the Executive Board
and teaches Sunday school, among
many other church leadership roles
and activities.
“Jerry purchases [and] provides
food and groceries for needy fami-
lies,” said Brunner. “He volunteers
to mow the lawn and shovels snow
for his elderly neighbor, too. Jerry is
always willing to volunteer his help
with anything needed [or] going on
in Athens.”
