He eventually retired from the City
of Battle Creek in 1997, he said.
“I was full time/full time,” he said.
“I worked there and when I came
home, I was still on duty. When
you’re a part paid firefighter, you’re
always on call. She knows. We start-
ed different places with the boys and
ended up somewhere at a house fire
or whatever. When you were home,
you were on duty.”
Newton remains a paid on-call
department, he said.
The couple remembers having
attended the parade in the days of the
Carl and Marti Laupp when Carl was
the fire chief.
“At that time, we stood down there
when the only thing that went by was
two or three horses and buggy and a
couple cars and fire truck,” he said.
“And now look at it. It’s huge, which
is nice.”
While the couple attended some
Home Grange meetings, they never
officially joined.
Since his retirement, Larry has

enjoyed working in his wood shop.
Besides their two sons, they have
five grandchildren and “five or six”
great grandchildren.
Larry said he was honored to be
grand marshal.
“It’s nice to be chosen,” he said,
“although I told my boys when they
asked me about it, I told them, ‘I
think they’re scraping the bottom of
the barrel.”
Curtis Roberts, also retired
from the Newton Township Fire
Department after 29 years, said he is
very proud of his parents and feels
the timing for them to serve as grand
marshals is good.
“They’ve done a lot for the com-
munity,” he said, “being part of the
fire department and having the fund
raisers for all the fire equipment.
They’ve just been a part of the com-
munity for a lot of years and helped
Carl and Marti for a lot of years.”
The couple rode in the parade on a
carriage owned by Darrell and Kathy
Wieas of Burlington.
“The do this for the community
every year,” said Curtis. “They take
the time to decorate this and put it all

together and make sure everybody’s
comfortable.”
