The United States Air Force
Thunderbirds displayed their extreme
speed and precision with carefully
choreographed barrel rolls, and at
times flew just 18 inches apart much
to the delight of thousands of spec-
tators at The annual Field of Flight
Airshow & Balloon Festival in
Battle Creek July 3-7.“Attendance
was massive this year. Way more
than projected or anticipated,” said
Bretten Bailey, media director for
The Field of Flight Airshow Festival.
“We had some packed days. We
were blessed with great weather and
an amazing lineup of civilian and
military acts.”
Not to be outdone by the roar of
the Thunderbirds, the A-10 Demo
Team performed at the Field of
Flight as well.
“It was bittersweet to host the A-10
Demo Team one final time.” Bailey
explained. “This was the A-10 Demo
Teams’ Farewell Tour and all A-10’s
will eventually be retired by the end
The Field of Flight Airshow & Balloon Festival was a big hit...again
of the decade.” He indicated this
was the final time for Firewalkers
International. They teamed up with
the A-10 Demo Team numerous
times over the years. “We will miss
the team and those aircraft here,
especially with their history in Battle
Creek.”Some of the popular attrac-
tions at the five-day festival included
two fireworks shows, balloon
launches/landings and two balloon
illumes.
The illumes give spectators a
chance to see the giant inflatables up
close while pilots tether their baskets
to the airfield and set off their burn-
ers.
It’s a ready-made photo opportu-
nity.
There was a Fiesta Division and
a Competition Division this year
for balloonists. Ranking the high-
est in the Competition Division was
Johnny Petrehn from Houston Texas
in the Magic Racer.
