add to agencies such as Calhoun
County Senior Services, Milestone
Senior Services, Carewell Services
already being at the site.
“We’re looking before the year’s
out to have a central location where
all the senior services and more
senior programs and activities will
all be available here,” Auton said.
“And to help us determine what
programs and activities seniors want
here, we created a two-page tool at
this workshop to get input, so that
local seniors have the opportunity
to tell us what is important to them
as far as activities – whether it be
physical activities, more fitness
types of things, art, social activities
and exercises – because at the end of
the day, our group and other organi-
zations can take that information and
build programs of what they want
instead of necessarily what we think
they want.”
Auton said that after results from
the surveys are compiled, decisions
for the betterment of local seniors
will be made.

“We’re going to compile these
results and take it from there,” Auton
said. “For example, if like 80 percent
of the folks on their surveys say they
want this or the want that, we’ll then
work with all the partners and ser-
vices to build the programs people
want.”
The timeframe for the changes and
additions to senior activities and pro-
grams at the Kool Center is “soon,”
said Auton.
“Our hope is that we can take the
results and start doing programming
by later this year,” he said.
Auton also noted the importance
for the Battle Creek community to
have a central site for senior servic-
es, programs and activities.
“There’s lots of research that
demonstrates the value of senior
center types of services as it relates
to social isolation and many other
senior-aged problems and things,” he
said. “So, this survey will hopefully
help seniors live better lives in the
area soon, in a variety of ways.”
Note: The Kool Family Community
Center as it is now known is located
at the corner of North Washington
Street and West Michigan Avenue in
the downtown area of Battle Creek.
