The fresh, indie folk sound of local

recording artist Syd Mars will be

among the 35 vocal music acts tak-

ing one of four stages at the annual

Leilapalooza Music Festival at Battle

Creek’s Leila Arboretum Saturday,

July 27 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Mars, a 2020 Olivet High School

graduate who just returned to the

Marshall area after two years in New

York, grew up wanting to someday

perform at Leilapalooza, they said,

so this year’s appearance is like a

dream come true.

“I’ve actually always wanted to

perform Leilapalooza ever since I

knew it was a thing, when I was like,

I don’t know, young,” said Mars.

“And, I reached out when I was in

eighth grade. And they said to send

a video but I never did. And then

this year, I moved back. So I was

like, ‘you know, I just wrote all this

music. What’s a better time to just

submit an application?’ So I sent

them a few videos, said ‘I’d love to

be part of it.’ And they reached out

almost immediately and they said

I’m going to be a part of it.”

Mars has recently released their

new EP, “Melancholia”, which

features four original songs written

from the heart about very personal

experiences, some relating to mental

health.

It can be found on Spotify, Apple

Music and YouTube.

“I play the ukulele with some lay-

ered vocals on top,” Mars explained,

“with some filters, you know, reverb,

all that stuff. All of the songs are

really personal to me. They’re about

my life in the past few years. I’ve

gone through a few things. I’ve gone

through a lot of mental health issues,

and I’m just healing and those songs

are about how I felt at the time,

how I felt recovering and how I feel

now.”

Mars, who last performed live on

open mic at Zuni cafe in New York

City, hails from a musical theatre
