some dances and has now grown to
over 70 programs a year.”
One participant who joined the
program that first year, R.T. Thayer,
said he has always enjoyed the activ-
ities at CIR and attended the party
wearing the first tee shirt that CIR
released.
“CIRs got all of the people who are
doing a good job,” said Thayer, who
said he likes bowling, golf and more.
Another CIR participant, Inga
Whatcott, 39, said she’s enjoyed
making new friends since she joined
at the age of 21.
“I love to go dancing,” she said. “I
love it. I went to the zoo trip and I
feed giraffes.”
One of her dancing partners is her
best friend whom she met at CIR,
Fawnna Cypher.
Cypher, 35, was 18 when she
began joining CIR activities and
events.
They said they also enjoy swim-
ming at Willard Beach through the
program.
Another friend of Inga’s is Zack

Poche said he also enjoys the activi-
ties that have also included attending
a Pow Wow.
“This place is really awesome for
the community,” he said.
According to http://www.cirfun.
com/programs, the non-profit,
supported by the Battle Creek
Community Foundation, Nexthermal,
Kreis Enderle law firm and WSI, as

well as funds generated via fundrais-
ers like the annual Kickball Classic,
offers everything from Adulting 101:
Skills for Independence to cooking,
art and water sports, to name a few.
CIR also maintains a network of
American Sign Language interpreters
via the DeafLink program.
“Health, personal, and social pref-
erences are all addressed in the CIR
programs,” according to the website.
“By creating a wide variety of activi-
ties for the mind and body, it encour-
ages participants to be their best in all
aspects of life.”
Services range from individual sup-
port to fully inclusive community
activities.
“By guiding healthy activity choic-
es, providing accessible transporta-
tion, financial assistance, and con-
nections to a variety of fun activities,
CIR strengthens the body and feeds
the creative soul,” the site reveals.
A new activity coming up this
summer, said Ostrander-Cook, is the
painting of a community mural in
connection with the upcoming Color
the Creek Street Art Festival typically
held the third week in August.
Nearly 50 people including par-

ticipants, family members, board
members and supporters attended
the picnic that included a specially
decorated birthday cake for the orga-
nization.
Attendees also played games, lis-
tened music and reminisced, said
Ostrander-Cook.
Staff members include Crissy
Castellanos, Wendy Baylis, Stephen
Edwardson, Dick Cook, Francine
Dozier, Jennifer Richardson and
Mike Austin, according to cirfun.
