A growing local business that start-
ed in Augusta at the former Askler’s
Pharmacy celebrated the opening
of its fifth location in Battle Creek
Saturday.
The liquidation firm Bin and Pallet
Co. also has stores in Portage and
Athens in addition to a local ware-
house.
“I’m so excited that the commu-
nity’s here,” said owner Melissa
Brink as she opened the doors to a
long line of waiting customers, “and
that we are hopefully able to provide
a great spot for people to come and
save some money. We’re welcoming
people into a safe space. We have
a nice little coffee bar and a lend-
ing library. Good meeting place for
friends and family.”
Nearly 100 percent of the inven-

box” retailers such as Target, Sam’s
Club, Amazon and Lowe’s, she said.
“And then we do have a couple of

small local businesses that do pro-
vide us inventory that we purchase
at wholesale,” said Brink, who oper-
ates the business with husband, Jeff.
“So, we have like Shelby’s Treasures

is one of them where she makes 3D
printed figures and then I purchase
them and sell them in my store. And
we’re looking at expanding that in
the future to provide wholesale for

other businesses.”
The Brinks are originally from
Crystal Lake, Ill. but moved to
Michigan to follow Jeff’s career.
Now, they employ 30 people across
all five locations.
“I sell the same stuff as other stores
but at a discount,” said Melissa.
At the grand opening, people were
able to take advantage of a new
clearance shelf where products are
“50-percent off our already reduced
pricing.”
“Our normal pricing is 40 to
70-percent off retail, depending
on the quantity of the item,” she
explained as the new location at 700
N. 20th Street buzzed with eager
shoppers during the grand open-
ing. “We did create a bulk buy area
where people can purchase items by
the box instead of individually so
that’s good for people maybe want-
ing to supply a classroom or donate
somewhere or maybe Christmas

The City of Battle Creek is seek-
ing members for a new, volunteer
Community Oversight Board, and is
asking for applications to be submit-
ted by Monday, Aug. 5.
The board was established with City
Commission approval, and several
years of work throughout the commu-
nity, said city spokesperson Jessica
Vanderkolk.
The Community Oversight Board
(COB) will be an advisory board to
the city manager, reviewing appeals
of investigations and findings from
community complaints against the
Battle Creek Police Department.
The COB will also create bridges
between the community and law
enforcement officers by supporting
community education and transparen-
cy, providing community perspective
on police department practices and
policies, and working to build cred-
ibility and community trust.
The board will have seven members
and two alternates who reflect the
city’s racial, gender, age, skill and

other demographics as closely as pos-
sible:

  • Up to seven members who live in
the City of Battle Creek; voting mem-
bers; three will represent the NAACP,
Voces and the Burma Center, com-
    munity organizations serving and
    advocating for marginalized neigh-
    bors.

  • Up to one member who lives in
    another municipality that receives
    contracted BCPD services.

  • Two members who live in the
City of Battle Creek; alternates who
will attend all meetings and have the
    rights, responsibilities and obliga-
tions of members in those members’
    absence.
In addition, the City of Battle
    Creek Human Resources director and
    Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offi-
cer will serve as ex-officio and non-
    voting members.
    Members must attend meetings at
least quarterly, as well as mandatory
    training sessions.
They must also participate in com-

munity engagement activities and
additional relevant training opportuni-
ties.
Members can serve two consecutive
three-year terms.
The following may not serve on the
COB: current City of Battle Creek
employees (except the HR direc-
tor and DEI officer, as described);
immediate relatives of city employees
(siblings, children, spouses/partners,
parents, or household members);
active employees of other area law
enforcement agencies and their imme-
diate relatives; former or retired law
enforcement officers who worked in
Calhoun County.
People may visit battlecreekmi.gov/
BoardsAndCommissions to apply
online or download the application
form to fill out and mail or drop off at
City Hall.
Those who require reasonable
accommodation to complete the
application can contact the city
manager’s office at (269) 966-
or [email protected].
