Nearly all the men and some of
the women gave their service during
World War II, she noted.
“We celebrate the lives of these
remarkable and ordinary people who
have reached this extraordinary mile-
stone,” she said.
The highlight of the event was the
project’s first centenarian couple,
Bud and Vi Halder, who have been
married 78 years.
Nerva Tripp, 104, from Battle
Creek, was also in attendance with
her daughter Judy, and was cel-
ebrated as the oldest living woman in
Calhoun County.
Robert Holt, 106, is currently the
oldest man in Calhoun County; he
was unable to attend.
The display may be seen at the
Calhoun County Fair in Marshall,
Aug. 11-17, in the Belcher Building.
Booklets of the stories and pho-
tographs are available at the Senior
Services office, 315 W. Green St.,

Emmett Charter Township is begin-
ning the selection process for a new
Director of Public Safety, Supervisor
Deb Belles said in a piece submitted
to the Shopper News last week.
“The Board of Trustees decided to
allow me to form a small advisory
committee of folks in the public
safety profession to whittle down the
applications to a recommended short
list for Board interviews. Those
interviews will take place at a public
meeting once we get to that point.”
Former Chief Ken Cunningham
resigned one year ago and the depart-
ment has been led by senior police
officials.
In other township news, Belles
reported:
The board selected a consultant to
facilitate the Master Land Use Plan
update (Master Plan for short).
The project anticipates community
engagement sessions in late winter.
These are a fun opportunity to
envision the future of Emmett
Township.

Again, the Master Plan guides zon-
ing ordinance amendments and pro-
vides direction for approaching land
use changes into the future.
The Township has also acquired
a 27-acre parcel on S. River Road
that went for back taxes using Park
Millage funds.
It is the property directly east of
Paddler’s Grove.
The Board has now approved a
planning effort to study the parcel,
layout ideas for park improvements,
and prepare for possible grant appli-
cations.
The fourth annual Cleanup Day
was a success this past June 1, she
said.
