A community block party will be
thrown Wednesday, Aug. 21 in the
heart of downtown Battle Creek
as the Battle Creek Community
Foundation (BCCF) celebrates
its 50th anniversary at its annual
meeting.
It’s the same way the BCCF
marked its 40th anniversary – in
block party style – which ended in a
shower of confetti.
The 2024 event was announced July
17 during a “Meet & Greet” with new
President and CEO Mary Muliett,
who took over the reins of the BCCF

Youths find their
voices through
protesting book bans

More than 300 book titles have been
banned by libraries and school dis-
tricts across Florida.
Other states like Vermont and
Kansas are also banning books that
small groups of people say they find
objectionable, including the clas-
sic children’s tale, Charlotte’s Web,
allegedly because it mentions death
and has talking animals.
Many books banned across the
country were written by Black
authors, including The Hate U Give
