Stephanie Jackson was looking

for employment opportunities and a

chance to brush up her resume.

A family member recommended

an appointment with Goodwill

Industries of Central Michigan’s

Heartland Inc. (GICMH) at the non-

profit’s Financial Opportunity Center

in downtown Battle Creek.

Jackson connected with

Employment Specialist Jennifer

Markos, who provided guidance and

encouragement that helped land her a

position working for Communities in

Schools at Battle Creek Central High

School.

“She helped me with my resume

and my cover letter, and was very

professional and consistent check-

ing on me, seeing if there was extra

support I needed along the way,”

Jackson said of Markos. “I really

love the job. I’ve always loved work-

ing with youth and students and I

knew that position was exactly what

I wanted. To have that resource

available through Goodwill, I think

it’s a phenomenal program.”

Jackson is one of many community

members to use the free employment

services to assist with job readiness

and career advancement.

According to the April 2024 Labor

Report by the Michigan Department

of Technology, Management and

Budget, Calhoun County has a labor

force totaling 61,900, with a 4.3 per-

cent unemployment rate.

Markos said one of the aims of

the GICMH employment services

is helping job seekers navigate the

labor market and “making sure they

are ready and confident.”

Participants can schedule in-

person meetings at the Financial

Opportunity Center at 15 Capital

Ave. N.E., where a Goodwill

employment specialist can provide

support with resume and cover let-

ter writing, help navigate job listing

websites using the on-site computer

labs, conduct mock interviews and

provide vouchers to purchase work

attire.

Participants can also be con-

nected to other community resources

through Goodwill’s consortium

with Michigan Works!, Kellogg

Community College and the

Woman’s Co-Op.

The GICMH employment program

can aid participants with their edu-

cational needs, helping them achieve

certifications that are required for

certain careers.

And there are special programs

and partnerships that help find work

opportunities for youth, veterans and

people with disabilities.

“Sometimes, participants are look-

ing for work and can’t find any,”

said Donna Lipp, employment spe-

cialist for GICMH. “Maybe they

applied to several places and just

weren’t getting anywhere. Teaching

them to navigate any of the job list-

ing websites and giving them the

information on how to make them-

selves more noticeable.”
