nNew utility poles made
to resist severe weather
Consumers Energy has purchased
1,200 iron utility poles – a $3.5 mil-
lion investment – to withstand the
forces of Mother Nature and keep
overhead power lines securely in
place.
These poles are stron-
ger, lighter and longer
lasting than their tradi-
tional wooden counter-
parts, the Jackson-based
utility company said in a
recent press release.
They are engineered to
resist fire and the effects
of Michigan’s harsh
weather, and they are
not vulnerable to wood
decay, woodpeckers,
insects or other wildlife.
Iron poles are expected
to last upwards of 80
years, which is approximately double
the lifespan of a wood pole.
This longer lifecycle, combined
with recent shortages and increas-
ing prices of wood, led Consumers
Energy to move ahead with sourcing
and installing iron poles this year.
“These new iron poles will fortify
our infrastructure, reducing the num-
ber of times that homes and business-
es lose power,” said Greg
Salisbury, Consumers
Energy’s vice president of
electric distribution engi-
neering.
Consumers Energy is
delivering the first iron
poles to the Kalamazoo,
Greenville and Tawas
areas.
Installations will then
expand to other areas and
replace existing wooden
poles throughout the
Consumers Energy service
territory.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on July 1
said that Michigan signed an agree-
ment with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers and Illinois to co-sponsor
the construction of the Brandon Road
Interbasin Project.
This milestone agreement with the
Biden Administration unlocks $274
million in federal and $114 million
in state funding for the first of three
phases of the $1.15 billion project,
which will prevent invasive carp and
aquatic nuisance species from enter-
ing the Great Lakes.
“Today’s agreement will help us get
shovels in the ground as soon as possi-
ble on the critical Brandon Road proj-
ect,” said Whitmer. “The Great Lakes
are the beating heart of Michigan’s
economy, and Brandon Road will help
us protect local communities and key
industries, including fishing and boat-
ing, that support tens of thousands of
good-paying jobs.”
Brandon Road Lock and Dam near
Joliet, Ill., is a critical pinch point to
stop invasive carp from moving into
the Great Lakes.
The project will implement a
complex series of invasive carp and
aquatic nuisance species deterrents.
Invasive carp, notably bighead, silver
and black carp, have
the potential to outcom-
pete other Great Lakes
fish species, resulting
in fewer fish like lake
whitefish, perch and
walleye.
If invasive carp were
to enter and colonize in
the Great Lakes basin,
inland rivers and lakes
would also be vulner-
able, the governor’s
office in Lansing noted.
