“Some people don’t care,” he said.
“It’s a ‘you pick’ orchard. And,
they’ll bring their kids out, see a big
apple and pick a big apple. It’s all

right. What I’ll do is, I’ll put the sign
out when they’re ripe. Or, say, ‘the
best picking is this.’”
Mid season varieties include
Jonathans and Empires.
The frequent, torrential rainfalls
this year, too, have contributed to the
quality of the apples.
“I think it made them a little bit
bigger,” said Salerno. “The size
of the apples, would be impacted.
There’s two things that were unusu-
ally heavy this year. One was the
rain and one was the deer browsing.”
The latter has forced Salerno to
spray some of the smaller trees to
ward off the deer.
“What I want to do is get them to
at least four foot,” he said. “Once
this gets to four foot, they can chew
all they want, this will keep grow-
ing. But if they don’t get above four
foot...”

Local activist and entertainer
Bobby Holley will be holding his
last free bike giveaway this year
for children in need on Saturday,
Aug. 17.
Holley is partnering with Tim
Kool, owner and CEO of Heritage
Chevrolet, and the Church of
Living Water for the event, which
will be held at Heritage Chevrolet,
350 W. Dickman Road, from 1-
p.m.
Holley added that winners have
been picked.
Holley said he has given more
than 300 bicycles to children ages
5-11 years old (grades K-6) this

year.
Children had to write an essay
about why they needed a bike.
“Most of these essays came
through their area schools and
were judged by the Church of
Living Water team, made up of
Starla Thompson, Tim Johnston,
Candace Leibert, Dave and Linda
Hyslop, and Herb Love,” said
Holley.
Thompson and Johnston also
raised funds through can and
bottle collections, and also helped
Holley with other aspects of the
bike campaign to make it a suc-
cess, noted Holley.

Holley’s last bike giveaway

of year is this Saturday
