GOT WEEDS?
The Battle Creek Symphony
Orchestra is bringing “Great Music
in Your Own Hometown” with this
year’s concert lineup.
Anne Harrigan, the BCSO’s music
director, said, “We want to empha-
size ‘Great Music in Your Own
Hometown.’ Even if Battle Creek is
not your hometown, the marketing
message is that we have extraordi-
nary live music right here with easy
access, great prices and free park-
ing.”
Bill White, the BCSO Board pres-
sident, added, “Last year was our
125th anniversary and we are stron-
ger than ever after all these years.
Our April 2024 concert was our big-
gest and best attended in 10 years,
and our overall season saw pre-Cov-
id size audiences. Maestra Harrigan’s
programming is again a mix of
genres and audience favorites.”
The five-concert season includes a
show featuring scores from favorite
fantasy movies and video games,
along with a fun cosplay costume
contest.
Oct. 5 concert kicks off this year’s B.C. Symphony lineup
Guest artist Jordan Hamilton will be
part of the “Fantastic Beats” concert.
Guest artist Carrie Krause will
perform in “Vivaldi by Candlelight.”
Guests Greg Anderson and Elizabeth
Joy Roe will perform April 12, 2025.
According to Susan Balbaugh,
executive director of The Music
Center, parent organization of the
BCSO, the November concert hon-
ors American veterans; December
sees the annual holiday concert;
in February, it’s “Vivaldi by
Candlelight”; and the season closer is
the piano duo of Anderson and Roe.
“Fantastic Beats (and where to
find them)” takes place Oct. 5, with
a concert inspired by music from
symphonic fantasy, television, mov-
ies and video games, including com-
positions from “Lord of the Rings,”
“How to Train Your Dragon,”
“Harry Potter,” “Game of Thrones”
and “The Legend of Zelda,” and
includes a costume contest.
The Nov. 2 show is called
“American Veteran” and includes
high school and college combined
choirs in a multimedia tribute to
military service members.
“Holiday Joy” on Dec. 14 will
include favorite Christmas and
Hanukkah music, dancers, special
guests, Santa and a Christmas carol
sing-along.
The Feb. 22, 2025, concert prom-
ises to be special, according to
Harrigan.
“I’m sure many have heard about
the beautiful candlelight concerts
held in Grand Rapids, Detroit and
Chicago. We are bringing this mov-
ing experience to Battle Creek with
‘Vivaldi by Candlelight.’ To cre-
ate the level of intimacy we want
to express, this is the only con-
cert not held at the W.K. Kellogg
Auditorium, but instead will be at
the lovely Pennfield High School
Auditorium,” she said.
The season will wrap up April 12,
2025, with “Dynamic Duo,” with
Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy
Roe on piano.
