Although the local prep boys’ soc-
cer campaign for the Michigan High
School Athletic Association’s Fall
2024 season is just a week old, five
city schools will be in action during
this Friday’s (Aug. 23) annual All-
City Tournament that will take place
at Lakeview High.
Both Spartan Memorial Stadium
(turf) and the Spartans’ adjacent
soccer field (grass) will be used for
tourney play.
In Friday’s 3 p.m. first-round open-
er, Battle Creek Central will take on
Pennfield at 3 p.m. at the stadium.
A semifinal match between Harper
Creek and the Calhoun Christian
Co-Op (a co-op with St. Philip and
Climax-Scotts) then follows on the
grass field at 4:45 p.m; and another
semifinal – on the turf at 5 p.m. –
will featured the winner of the BCC
vs. Pennfield match taking on five-
time-defending champ and tourney
host Lakeview.
Once those contests are completed,
the championship game will take
place in the stadium at 7 p.m., with
Battle Creek Central junior Alexander Small (9) had a pair of goals in the
Bearcats’ season-opening home victory over the visiting Calhoun Christian
Co-Op squad last Friday. Also in the photo for BCC is junior Griffin Roberson

Monday) is Battle Creek Academy –
which last season played in its first-
ever All-City tourney and wound up
playing in the title tilt vs. Lakeview.

Creek Central unit and coach Mike
VanderBilt’s Calhoun Christian
Co-Op, BCC posted a 5-2 triumph.
With two goals each for the
Bearcats were senior Hangmang
Thang and junior Alexander Small;
with one goal was junior Taichi
Matsuura; and in the nets was junior
goalkeeper Joshua Shroll Jr.
Scoring both Cougar goals was
Johann Albarran-Aguilar; and in the
nets for CC was Andrew Belote.

PART-TIME CROSSING GUARD
Supervised By: Police Department
FLSA: Non-exempt
Shift Rate: $25 per shift
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Springfield Department of Public Safety, conducts safe
transportation of school aged children and adults across streets at assigned crossings and
performs related work as required. Provides outstanding customer service to pedestrians.
Hours are two hours per school day, morning shift and afternoon shift, or on call as needed.
Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential
functions. These examples do not include all the duties which the employee may be expected
to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential function satisfactorily.
- Safely guide pedestrians, especially children, across designated crosswalks.
- Follow traffic rules and regulations to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
- Inspects and maintains crossing guard equipment and tools in proper operating condition.
- Communicate with drivers to ensure they stop for pedestrians.
- Monitor and report any unsafe conditions or incidents to the appropriate authorities.
- Provides friendly, courteous, and helpful communication when interacting with the general
public, pedestrians, and drivers. - Provide assistance to pedestrians with disabilities or special needs.
- Performs related work as required.

An employee in this position spends the majority of their time working outdoors. Duties
