and Natural), “it’s the perfect place
to learn how to operate one of these
carts and how to play a round of golf
on one of them.”
“Being able to drive around to the
practice range and practice driving
the cart, and being able to drive the
cart around and play the three-hole
practice course before playing on the
regular nine-hole courses here, that’s
just huge,” Osborne said.
“Now,” continued Osborne, “just
remember that some things using the
VertaCat might take you some time.
It might be one or two or three or
more times before you even get off
the practice range or off the practice
course and feel comfortable enough
to get on a regular course here.
“But aside from tough slopes and
bunkers – things you want to avoid
in the cart – it’s going to enable you
to play golf at a time in one’s life
that they’d never imagine they’d be
doing something like playing golf
again due to their mobility prob-
lems.”
‘Feeling Normal Again’
Asked if there was a specific
moment when he was overcome by
positive emotions when he realized
he could return to playing golf after
his injury, Krimmel said there were –
and are – instead many.
“Every time I get in this cart and
start playing golf, I’m feeling normal
again – and I get a little emotional,”
Krimmel said.
Krimmel and his wife Diane
(Davis), also a Lakeview High grad,
have three grown children and one
grandchild.
Krimmel said he and Diane are
now a regular twosome on Binder
Park’s layouts again; that he and
Funk and others regularly play in
twosomes or foursomes at BPGC
(“The pace of play with the VertaCat
is just about the same as any other
twosome or foursome using carts
out there,” Osborne said); and that
he plans on playing in upcoming
fundraisers at BPGC the rest of this
season and then return to Lakeview
Lounge league play next year.
Another person using the VertaCat
cart this season, Osborne said, has
been Alan Waller, a mobility-chal-
lenged local player who played golf
with his son at Binder Park this past
Father’s Day.
“Golfing using the VertaCat is just
like any other sport, or like regular
golf play: The more you play, the
better you get,” said Krimmel, who
said he started playing golf in his
early 30s and is still at it in his 60s –
despite his mobility challenges.
“And the way I play golf now on
the VertaCat is swinging the club
with my right arm while stabilizing
myself with my left arm – I’m better
and more comfortable swinging with
one arm instead of two – and having
as much fun out there as I can.
“But aside from me playing golf
again, which of course I love, my
whole thing now is like I said before:
Making awareness of the VertaCat to
others. It’s just a wonderful feeling,
feeling normal again, playing a sport,
an activity, where I’ve met a lot of
people through my lifetime and made
a lot of friends.”

mentioned number (269-979-8250)
for details about using the cart.
‘Thanks’ To Sponsors
Aside from thanking the City of
Battle Creek for its huge contribu-
tion (from Binder Park GC’s budget)
toward the purchase of the VertaCat
cart, both Krimmel and Osborne also
wanted to make sure that sponsors
who contributed toward the $19,
raised during BPGC’s ADA fund-
raiser golf outing last Sept. 29 at the
course also received “thanks.”
Those contributors were (according
to Krimmel and Osborne):
