Every student - nearly 400 - at
Prairieview Elementary School was
able to start the new school year
Wednesday with backpacks full of
free school supplies thanks to a new
partnership between Sunshine Toyota
of Battle Creek and the Kids in Need

Foundation.
In fact, the dealership also pro-
vided more than 150 Dudley STEM
Elementary School students with
the same gift on their first day of
school Aug. 21, said Sunshine Toyota
owner, Gary Minneman.

two years ago now, and the whole
purpose of the Kids In Need
Foundation is to provide school sup-
plies to kids that can’t afford their
own so we decided to be one of the
major supporters of it this year,” said
Minneman, “where we do a whole
school takeover and provide enough
supplies for the whole school.”
Minneman’s staff, friends and fam-

the front lawn of Prairieview to hand
out everything from notebooks to
glue sticks and more as students and
their families appeared for their Meet
the Teacher event.
The school also gave each family
two boxes of Post cereal.
“We’re one of the 40 places nation-
wide where the whole school is get-
ting supplies,” said Minneman, who
on Wednesday, went into the Dudley
classrooms to hand supplies directly
to the students.
Based in Minneapolis, Minn., the
Kids in Need Foundation was rep-
resented at the event by Wade Jones
who said the entire backpack full of
supplies is valued at more than $50
each.
In all, 619 Toyota dealerships
across the country are participat-
ing in the Big Summer Backpack
Giveaway and more than 47 of them,
including Sunshine Toyota, have
committed to $10,000 donations in
the community to make sure local
students start the year with new sup-
plies.
