The original Marengo Town Hall
at 20995 F Drive North in Marshall
is now the home of Dave and Mary
Fountain and will be featured as part
of the 59th Annual Marshall Historic
Home Tour coming up on Sept. 7-8.
The Fountains purchased the home
in 2001 from Roger and Marilyn
Shreve, who purchased the town hall
and converted it into a home in the
late 1960s.
Marengo Township had purchased
the property in 1859 from the origi-
nal owner, Isaac Rogers.
Before the Fountains made the
purchase, Dave said the couple had
heard the property was for sale.
Then, one day, Dave said he saw
Roger driving his tractor down the
road and made the inquiry face-to-
face.
“I followed him to where he was
pulling in and asked him [if they
were selling the house]. He said
‘yeah’ and I said we wanted to
buy. It happened that quick,” Dave
explained.
Dave’s family is from the area and
Mary and Dave Fountain are shown outside of their home off F Drive North
and 21-Mile Road.
Former Marengo Town Hall featured on Marshall Home Tour
lived on a farm on J Drive.
After a while, Mary and Dave
moved to Homer, where Dave man-
aged a farm.
Then, the two decided they wanted
to be back in the Marshall area and
proceeded to purchase their current
home.
At the time, the two said they
weren’t aware of any history associ-
ated with the home that was once a
place where local government deci-
sions were made.
“We decided we wanted to be back
in this neighborhood, and we were
lucky enough to have heard this
was for sale,” Mary said. “After we
bought it, we didn’t even realize [the
history].”
Added Dave, “We didn’t really
look it over, we just told Roger
we wanted to buy it. We didn’t go
through it or anything. We didn’t
know the history, and the price was
reasonable enough that there wasn’t
any question whether it was worth it
