or not.”
The Fountains settled into and lived
in the home for several years until
2007, when they decided to gut the
home and do a complete remodel.
Dave, who is the current Marengo
Township supervisor, was in con-
struction for most of his working
years and operated his own construc-
tion business for 20 years.
Using that expertise, Dave drew up
plans for the new layout and spent
many evenings and weekends work-
ing on the house while they lived in
their travel trailer on the property
from May 2007 up until November
2008.
The upgrades included opening up
the drop ceiling, changing the entire
layout of the home while adding a
laundry/bath and mechanical room
to house the furnaces, and adding
a second-floor addition with a loft,
bedroom, bathroom and storage.
All of the beadboard in the home is
original to the structure, along with
all of the flooring.
“We did everything [the remodel-
ing] with family and friends,” said
Dave. “If I had questions about
electrical or plumbing, I knew guys
because I worked for a contractor
in Albion. So, I would call and say,
‘Send me a bill’ [for the advice] and
they would say, ‘Oh, don’t worry
about it.’ I got some free advice
when we were doing it. We redid the
whole inside of this – materials and
everything, not counting labor, was
$25,000.”
Another unique part of the home’s
history that the Fountains were
unaware of at the time of the pur-
chase is that the building suffered a
fire in the rafters and roof area in the
1940s.
As it turned out, the couple heard a
story that Dave’s father helped repair
the damage the building suffered
from the fire.
“My dad was a farmer and he was
also a carpenter,” Dave said. “The
story we heard is that they had a fire
in this building at some point and
my dad helped restore it. I never
knew that [until after his parents had
passed away], so I couldn’t ask them
