Museum Board, to name a few. “One
is to raise awareness of the airport
because a lot of people in the com-
munity aren’t really aware of what
we have.”
Years ago, it was a passenger air-
port.
“Back then, 50 years ago, every-
body knew what was going on out
here,” said Shaw at the airport last
Thursday. “There was a lot more
awareness of people because they
probably traveled in and out of here
a lot. Since the airlines moved to
Kalamazoo there’s this opinion that
nothing happens out here. ‘We don’t
have any flights here.’ So there’s
‘what goes on out there?’ ”
What people don’t realize, and he
wants to change is the awareness
that it’s one of the city’s largest
assets as one of the city’s largest
employers.
“Collectively, we have Western,
Waco, Duncan, the Air Guard and
it’s the second busiest airport in
Michigan, second or third depending

what statistic you look at,” he said,
“in general aviation. So that’s proba-
bly because Western and Duncan are
flying in and out of here constantly.
“And,” he continued, “there’s so
much that people don’t know about
this airport. And when we lost air-
lines a few years ago, it was a mixed
blessing.”
That event, he said, paved the way
for Duncan, which was Kal-Aero, to
locate in Battle Creek.
“And that was probably the cata-
lyst that got everything going here,”
he said. “And then when Western
(Michigan University School of
Aviation) took over the terminal
here, that was huge. So these things
happened because we lost our air-
lines.”
Formerly known as W.K. Kellogg
Airport, now known as Battle Creek
Executive Airport at Kellogg Field,
once had terminals for North Central,
Air, Wisconsin and, American
Airlines, to name a few.
“We had several airlines that actu-
ally flew out of Battle Creek,” he
said. “We used to have commercial
flights here. After World War II, it
