“I can’t believe we’re holding our
13th Kickball Classic,” said Rhonda
Ostrander-Cook, Executive Director
of CIR (Community Inclusive
Recreation), Inc. “We wanted to
build a fundraiser that was also way
for the community to experience
inclusion in a fun, recreational set-
ting. I think we’ve done that job
pretty well!”
On Sunday, Sept. 22 corporate and
non-profit teams will gather at noon
at Bailey Park to play tournament

style kickball.
Each team will be joined by CIR
All-Stars, players who have disabili-
ties who are part of their team for the
day.
Sponsors of the 2024 Kickball
Classic are led by Lakeview Ford
Lincoln and its owner, Vince Pavone,
who has helped organize the Classic
since its early days, said Ostrander-
Cook.
Other sponsors and teams this
year include Honor Credit Union,

Kickball Classic for CIR is Sept. 22 at Bailey Park

Firekeepers Casino, Auto Maxx,
SJS Electric, Restore 269, Warner,
Norcross + Judd, E3 Achievement,
Doris Klaussen Developmental
Center, Summit Pointe, VOCES,
Athens Schools Football Team,
Worgess Insurance, and an additional
team of CIR participants.
The teams will play double elimi-
nation tournament Kickball and the
winner takes home a trophy.
“It’s kind of fun bragging rights,”
said Ostrander-Cook. “Last year, SJS
Electric took 1st place with Athens
Football right on their heels. So they
are both back defending their titles”.

In addition to the games, there will
be food, raffles and a silent auction
for a signed Jared Goff football.
For the last 30 years, CIR’s mis-
sion has been to facilitate recreation
and arts programs and events for
people of all abilities.
“Our goal has been to cre-
ate a community where everyone
belongs,” said Ostrander-Cook.
“Every time we hold an event like
this that brings people together we
get closer to that reality. The public
is encouraged to come out, watch the
games, grab a hot dog and cheer the
teams on.”

September is National Preparedness
Month, and individuals are encour-
aged to prepare now and throughout
the year for any future emergencies
and disasters.
This year’s theme is “Start a
Conversation” and encourages
people to talk with their families
and prepare for bad things that could
happen, said Erin Somerlott, emer-
gency preparedness coordinator for
the Calhoun County Public Health
Department.
Starting a conversation can help
people take the simple steps to build
preparedness, according a CCPHD
press release:
“Set aside time when everyone is
calm and relaxed.
“Hold the discussions over a set
period of time so the decisions aren’t
rushed and people feel more com-
fortable talking about disasters and
emergencies.
“Discuss what steps you have
already taken to prepare and what
further actions might help build on
your preparedness.
“Visit Ready.gov for tool kits in
multiple languages to get your con-
versation started.”
“It is important for individuals,
families, organizations and busi-
nesses to always be prepared for an
emergency,” said Somerlott. “It can
be overwhelming. However, doing
just one thing at a time can help
you and your family be ready when
disaster strikes.”
