The Calhoun County Public Health
Department on Sept. 13 said it is
tracking a human case of West Nile
Virus in a Calhoun County resident.
The patient has a limited travel
history, so it is likely he/she con-
tracted the virus after being bitten by
a mosquito in Calhoun County, the
CCPHD noted in a press release.
“It is important to remember that
mosquitoes remain active, even later
in the season,” said Eric Pessell,
health officer at the Calhoun County
Public Health Department. “We
encourage everyone to take simple
precautions to reduce the risk of
being bitten.”
The best treatment for West Nile
Virus is prevention.
The CCPHD recommends wearing
a mosquito repellent that contains
10-35 percent DEET; wearing light-
colored clothing; and staying indoors
during dusk.
Also, people can help stop mos-
quitoes from breeding by removing
any standing water in their yards and
keeping lawn and shrubs cut.
While most people who become
infected with West Nile Virus will
never know it, about 20 percent may
develop a fever or other symptoms,
and in rare cases, the virus can be
fatal.
Forbes recently released its 2024
list of “America’s Best-In-State
Employers.”
In Michigan, Bronson Healthcare is
the fourth highest ranking employer
among hospitals and health systems
and is ranked 36th overall across all
employer categories and industries in
the state, said Bronson spokesperson
Marcie McCann.
This is the third year in a row that
Bronson has earned this accolade.
“At Bronson, our commitment to
fostering a supportive and inclusive
environment is central to every-
thing we do. Receiving this award
reflects the collective efforts of our
entire team, from our dedicated
leaders to every employee who con-
tributes to making Bronson a great
place to work,” said Chief People
Officer Cheryl Johnson at Bronson
Healthcare.
Bronson Healthcare, headquartered
in Kalamazoo, is the largest employ-
er and leading health care system in
southwest Michigan.
With more than 9,000 employees
Forbes: Bronson Healthcare among best employers
and more than 1,500 medical staff
members, it offers a full range of ser-
vices, from primary care to critical
care across more than 100 locations,
including Bronson Battle Creek
Hospital.
Bill Manns, president and CEO,
Bronson Healthcare, said in part,
“Receiving this recognition from
Forbes is indicative of the posi-
tive and inclusive culture we enjoy
throughout our regional healthcare
system. Receiving it three years in
a row also shows that this is part of
our culture and an ongoing com-
mitment to building and retaining a
strong workforce.”
To create its annual list, Forbes
partnered with market research firm
Statista to survey a representative
sample of employees working full-
or part-time at compa-
nies with more than 500
employees.
All surveys were anony-
mous, allowing partici-
pants to openly share their
opinions and rate their
employers on a variety of
criteria.
