Works Environmental Department.
“Individuals and groups will be
collecting trash along the city’s
Linear Path and other parks and
areas throughout the city and plant-
ing native trees in one of our urban
forests,” she said.
Volunteers will meet at the City of
Battle Creek’s Department of Public
Works located at 150 S. Kendall
Street at 8:30 a.m.
“All tools and supplies will be
provided,” said Ploeg. “In addition,
there will be snacks, drinks, coffee
and donuts and free t-shirts, while
supplies last.”
A new location this year will be
the Capital Ave. SW boardwalk near
the intersection of West Columbia
Avenue, said the man who instigated
that effort, Martin Spranger.
“The more people we have
involved, the quicker we can com-
plete the cleanup,” said Spranger,
who became concerned about the
amount of the conditions surround-
ing the bridge while walking it daily.
“When you walk the bridge, you
can look down over the side, espe-
cially when the winter comes and the
leaves are off, you can just see the
garbage that’s been thrown out over
the years and not been picked up.”
The bridge, estimated to be about
1,000 feet long from Weeks Ave. to
Golden Ave., spans a steep decline
from the roadside down to a storm
pond surrounded by heavy foliage.
“I understand why that hasn’t
been picked up, because it’s quite a
steep terrain down,” said Spranger.
“And then you go into a reclamation
water part of the city. So, it’s kind of
muddy and murky down there, but if
you walk the bridge, you can see just
how bad it is.”
When he contacted Ploeg, he
learned of the upcoming cleanup
effort and she was on board with
adding the location to the project
though it has not been part of the
Krazy for the Kazoo before.
“We mainly focus on the Mill Pond
along the Kalamazoo River, the lin-
ear path Irving Park,” said Ploeg.
“But since we’ve been inspecting
our storm ponds, we’ve noticed that
there’s a need for trash pickup and
some shrub removal so it can do its
job.”
Ploeg said residents are always
welcome to call the city to bring
attention to accumulating litter.
“I think it’s great the neighborhood
wants to do this,” said Ploeg. “I think
we need more people like him, to get
this word out. There’s a lot of people
that want to help the community. We
hear it sometimes too, and we get
tied up in just doing certain events.
We can supply you with the things
you need, and we will in Spring get
whatever we don’t get in the fall. We
can do in the spring before the buds
and everything come out.”
Spranger also hopes to work with
the city to get a fresh coat of paint on
the bridge, he said.
According to Ploeg, other major
clean up sites include behind the
Family Fare in Urbandale, the linear
path along Wagner Drive, Willard
Beach and sites downtown.
The project will also involve plant-
ing native trees along Jackson Street
where invasive trees have been
removed.
“Last year we had everybody show
up between 8:30 a.m. and nine to
check in,” said Ploeg, “and then then
we disperse from there and they’ll go
to locations.”
Spranger recommend anyone who
chooses to help clean up under the
Capital Ave. SW bridge wear heavy
booths, thick, long pants and other
safety attire due to the possibility of
poison ivy, broken glass and other
hazards.
“This is a great opportunity to get
outside and do something positive
for your community. We encourage
you to bring your family, friends,
organization or just yourself to the
event,” said Hoch-Melluish. “All are
welcome!”
Preregistration is required to vol-
unteer for the event by contacting
