Miles For Memories was created
in 2013 to raise awareness and funds
for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Later in 2014, they expanded their
vision to include all types of demen-
tia, according to their website.
“We raise money each year through
sponsorships, community events, and
grants to gather funds to create local
programming for both the person
living with dementia and the care-
giver,” the site conveys. “Along with
our local efforts we also send 20-per-
cent of the funds to prevention-
related dementia research. We are a
committee of 70-plus volunteers and
are always looking for more to get
involved.”
The organization has raised $1 mil-
lion since its inception, said Sherban.
Over half of that, she said, has
been because of Michigan Health
Endowment Fund grants to develop,
train, and distribute safe return pro-
grams and devices through emergen-
cy response programs, aging adult
programming agencies across the
state, as well local programs.

“That money was held in a sepa-
rate account at the Battle Creek
Community Foundation,” noted
Sherban. “ Miles for Memories
is a Community Project Fund of
Encourage BC at the Battle Creek
Community Foundation and is an
organization of volunteers.
“Without them we could not do
what we do. But credit to all our
sponsors and donors needs to be
given as well. Without them we
would not have the resources to
develop and offer programs unique
to our community.”
The programming emphasis each
year is decided upon by the full lead-
ership committee, she said.
“And because of their combined
efforts we have been able to truly
make an impact in Calhoun County,”
she said. “In addition to our Legacy
Sponsor of CareWell Services, the
sponsors will all be listed online, at
the event, and in follow up materi-
als.”
For the event day they have 59
volunteers that will be helping with
the Community Stroll Celebration.
