Creek Community Foundation.
“Brenda was very interested in
what we were doing,” said Momenee
about how it all came to fruition.
“She just wanted to help people in
the community, and wanted us to
band together and do great things.
And when she saw that there was a
group of women in poverty doing
it, she was super impressed by that.
And so Brenda is probably the big-
gest person that was responsible for
us making our evolution to that next
step, because she introduced us to
funders. She got us support to learn
how to write grants. She brought a
consultant, she helped us file our
501(c3) and become a standalone
organization. She helped us to build
our initial board. I mean, like, she
was really responsible for a lot of the
stuff in the beginning.”
Today, Woman’s Co-op offers life
enrichment classes, education and
training, emergency services, net-
working opportunities and more.
The Co-op also for several years
operated an industrial sewing pro-
gram in which women could repair
or make items for a fee.
“We still do GED,” she said. “We

train on site for clerical workers and
commercial janitorial but then we
just added in 2022 off site partners
who do the same thing. They train
someone to work in their facility.
So we work with SnackWerks of
Michigan, Bronson Food Services,
Community Action Agency’s early
childhood education program.”
It maintains a small supply closet
with everything from diapers to
clothing and even works with the
Calhoun County courts to help peo-
ple pay their fines and perform court
ordered community service.
Over the years, the organization
has relied on an event called The
Painted Chair Affair, the brainchild
of founding board chair, the late Jean
Krohn, to help serve as its major
annual fund raiser.
“We took a year off from doing the
painted chair fair to kind of revamp
it, and we were looking for some-
thing to replace that fundraiser this
year, just to fill in, because we want
to bring painted chair fair back, of
course,” said Momenee. “And this
idea of the gala came up, and we
said it’s it’s both it’s to celebrate and
it’s also to replace the painted chair
fair. So we do have a silent auction
available that night, but mostly it’s
just about celebrating.”

with alopecia

My Brave Sheros', this one's for
you!!!
September celebrates Alopecia
Awareness. Sisters, hair loss is usu-
ally an incredibly stressful experi-
ence for us.
I know from personal experience
how traumatic it is and it never goes
away.
It is a physical and mental trauma
that we suffer silently. I still have
daily trauma.
There was a time when I never left
the house without a hat on my head.
Presently I wear a short haircut,
with other modifications, to face the

world.
Many say the hairdo looks good on
me. That makes my day and helps to
build my self-esteem.
Alopecia itself does not limit abili-
ties the mental health impact can.
If you have alopecia or you have
recently undergone chemotherapy,
you may be eligible to receive wigs
through VA health care.

Talk to your VA healthcare team.
It could be beneficial, especially
for your mental health.
How can you support those with
alopecia?
Speaking out against bullying can
help create a safer space for people
with hair loss, especially children.
You can also donate your hair to
organizations that make wigs and
hairpieces for patients with alopecia
areata.
Here are a few: Locks of Love,
Wigs for Kids, Children with hair
loss.
