Community Communion

Service kicks off SMBC’s

175th anniversary celebration

Second Missionary Baptist Church will be celebrating its 175th anniversary
during October.

On Sunday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m.,
Second Missionary Baptist Church
(SMBC) will host a Community
Communion Service, with 12 local
churches participating, as part of its
175th Anniversary Celebration.
This Community Communion
Service is the initial celebration of
the 175th anniversary, with numer-
ous events planned for the month
of October, according to an SMBC
press release.
According to history, in 1849, a
small group of Christians met from
house to house to hold religious ser-
vices.
They were initially known as the
Second Baptist Society and had
previously worshipped sitting in the
balcony of First Baptist Church with
a white congregation.
“Two white ministers, the Rev.
Parmalee and the Rev. Harris,
organized this group as the Second
Baptist Church during a meeting
at First Baptist,” the press release
noted. “This was notably the first
Black organization of any kind in
Battle Creek.”
SMBC is the second oldest Black
church in the state of Michigan, the
church said.

“SMBC has served its members
and the community in so many ways
that has glorified God and affirmed
the witness of being a committed
and compassionate congregation in
the community,” said SMBC Senior
Pastor Rev. William J. Wyne. “This
interdenominational and multicul-
tural worship experience is another
affirmation of the ministry and
the message of the Second Baptist
Church as it seeks to live out their
faith according to the word of God.”
The 175th Community Communion
Service will be a collaborative ser-
vice that is being supported by Mt.
Zion A.M.E., First Salem M.B.C.,
Shiloh M.B.C., Ceresco Baptist
Church, First Presbyterian Church,
Faith Temple C.O.G.I.C., Chapel
Hill U.M.C., Renew Christian
Church, Washington Heights
U.M.C., Unity M.B.C. and Trinity

LEROY TOWNSHIP PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE
The Leroy Township Board will conduct a Public Hearing
on October 17, 2024, at 9:30 am at the Leroy Township Com-
munity Building, 8146 4 Mile Road, East Leroy, MI 49051,
as required under State of Michigan Public Act 188 of 1954,
Public Improvements.
The purpose of the Public Hearing is to determine whether
or not the improvements made to the Edgebrook PS 0-2 Lift
Station, located at 120 Edgebrook Drive, were necessary to
extend its function as a fully operational wastewater lift sta-
tion. Plans and overall costs of the project are on file with the
Township Clerk. They are available for public examination at
the Township Office during normal business work or on the
Township website, http://www.leroytownship.org.
The creation of a Special Assessment District shall be nec-
essary to pay for said improvements. That assessment district
would encompass the following (2) land parcels only in Leroy
Township:

  1. Parcel No. 14-012-015-50

  2. Parcel No. 14-012-006-00
Township assessing records indicate that both land parcels
are owed by Caribbean MHC Owner, LLC, 6547 N. Avondale,
    #301, Chicago, Illinois, 60631.
Periodic redeterminations may be made without further
notice to record owners or parties in interest of the property.
Any objection to the necessity of the improvement must be
done at the Public Hearing on October 17, 2024, or in writing
to the Leroy Township Board, 8156 4 Mile Road, East Leroy,
Michigan 49051, either at or before the Public Hearing.
