From helping the Love Thy
Neighbor Food Pantry pack week-
end meals for students through its
backpack program to helping to
build mobility ramps, the Cereal City
Sunrise Rotary Club supports a host
of community causes.
In fact, in the past two years, they
have provided grants and donations
totaling more than $30,000 to the
aforementioned efforts, as well as
to Woman’s Co-Op, the Salvation
Army, Boy Scouts of Southwest
Michigan Council, Kellogg
Community College’s new pickleball
courts and they even sent money to
help the city of Maui after last year’s
devastating wildfire in Hawaii.
“We’re very active in diabetes,”
said past president George Bratcher.
“We’ve got a lot of projects. One is
we just bought some glucometers for
Grace Health. We’ve had some dia-
betes screening events, educational
The club is also raising money via sponsorships like the “Platinum” level
option purchased by Honor Credit Union for $2,500 which gets them six event
tickets, tasting station hosting, space for advertising material and having their
name and logo in the event materials. (Photo provided)
Cereal City Sunrise Rotary Club supports a variety of local causes
events, so diabetes has been a big
focus for the past two years.”
If not for fund raising events
like the Nov. 1, 2024 “Wines from
Around the World” wine tasting and
silent auction - which includes a
Nolan Ryan signed baseball - none
of this would happen.
The event gives ticket holders a
chance to sample 30 different wines
from Spain, France, Italy, Argentina
and North America including one
from Michigan.
This year’s event is being held at
the Battle Creek Country Club and
the $50 tickets are available from
Bratcher at (269) 420-5863.
They’re also available via a QR
code found on event flyers posted
around Battle Creek which takes
ticket buyers to ticketing.events/app/
portal/1/11330/wines-from-around-
the-world-ticketing.
Among the other 60-plus silent
auction items is a Tom Izzo signed
MSU basketball, as well as several
fine art pieces including some from
local artists Dawn Hawks and Joanne
Leche, plus bed and breakfast and
vacation rentals in South Haven, golf
packages, entertainment tickets to
the Turkeyville Dinner Theatre, the
Brass Band of Battle Creek and the
Barn Theatre Christmas Show.
A number of gift certificates from
local businesses are included.
The first time the club held the
wine tasting and silent auction fun-
draiser three years ago, it generated
around $42,000 while last year’s
event netted in the low $20,000s,
said Club President Tony McCrum.
“This year’s goal is $40,000, said
McCrum. “With everything Dick has
put together, we have a pretty good
chance.”
McCrum was referring to club
member Richard “Dick” Schlatter
who chairs the fundraising commit-
tee.
“This year, we’re focusing on
bringing in some really quality
pieces,” said Schlatter of the silent
auction, adding that the club’s eye
is on the goal. “We want to be all
over the community doing all kinds
of stuff. It’s nice to have kind of
a focus within our area so we’re
saying affordable housing, needed
home repairs, we might be building a
couple of ramps in conjunction with
other community partners.”
The event will offer five tasting
stations supplied by Vintage Wines
for which Mike Schlatter is district
sales manager.
“When people come in, they’ll
