As part of its 175th anniversary,
Second Missionary Baptist Church
will present the play “Who Stole
Them Church Hats?” at 7 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 11.
The church is located at 485 N.
Washington Ave. in Battle Creek.
The play, written and directed by
Buddy Hannah from Kalamazoo,
provides a snapshot of the history of
church hats, while giving a lesson in
being too judgmental, based on the
scripture Luke 6:37, according to an
SMBC press release.
In the play, several women of
Horace Grove Baptist Church have
come together for a yearly Women’s

Day Celebration.
This year, they have put together a
collection of church hats to be used
during that celebration.
The plan is to stage a fashion show
and use the hats to explain the his-
tory of church hats worn by African-
American women.
It’s a well-laid plan until the hats
go missing and the question becomes
“who stole them church hats” and a
matter of prejudgment.
The public is invited to this free
event, and women are encouraged to
wear their favorite church hat for the
occasion.

The play “Who Stole Them Church Hats?” will be offered at SMBC on Friday,
Oct. 11. Performers, from left, are Betty Moorehead, Melanie Harter, Deborah
Bonds, Jennifer LaGrand-Williams, Gloria Clayton, Bridget Banks and Jessica
LaGrand.
