The Battle Creek Senior Branch
of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People is
inviting the public to its 89th Annual
Freedom Fund Dinner on Friday,
Oct. 25.
According to Lynn Ward Gray,
Freedom Fund Dinner co-chairper-
son, the event will be held at the
DoubleTree by Hilton Battle Creek,
located at 50 S.W. Capital Ave.
The reception will begin at 5:30
p.m., followed by dinner and a pro-
gram at 6 p.m.
This year’s theme is “ALL IN.”
“The branch will share the suc-
cesses of the past year; efforts to reg-
ister, educate and ‘Get Out the Vote’
this election cycle, and celebrate our
2024 Image Award recipients,” said
Ward Gray.
Wynell J. Soul and Walt Williams
Jr. will provide the evening’s enter-
tainment.
“We know the work we do as a
branch is making a difference, and
having the community support us
each year at this annual fundraiser
is appreciated and so very impor-
tant as we focus our efforts not only
on national NAACP initiatives but
what impacts us right here in Battle
Creek,” explained Ward Gray.
Locally, proceeds from the
Freedom Fund Dinner will be used

Oct. 22, for a presentation
on “Victorian True Crime in
Southwest Michigan.”
Local author Michael Delaware
will present the program at the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
Day Saints, located at 16036 US
Hwy. 27 N. in Marshall.
Delaware will be discussing

cases that he covers in his new
book, “Victorian Southwest
Michigan True Crime.”
This meeting will be held in-
person at the church, but attendees
can also join via Zoom, by reach-
ing out on Facebook or emailing
michigancalhoungene@yahoo.
com for the Zoom link.
The Society’s meetings are free
and open to the public, a press

NOTICE OF SUBMITTAL OF ORDINANCE
TO: The residents and property owners of the Charter Township of Pennfield, Calhoun County, Michigan and any other interested
persons:
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that a proposed Battery Storage Zoning Ordinance amendment was submitted to the Township Board for
first reading at its regular meeting conducted on October 8, 2024.
PLEASE TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that said the proposed Zoning Ordinance will be considered for adoption by the Township
Board at a regular meeting to be held at the Pennfield Middle School located at 8587 Pennfield Road, Battle Creek, MI 49017, on
Tuesday, November 12, 2024 commencing at 6:00 p.m.
A full copy of the proposed Battery Storage Zoning Ordinance amendment has been posted at the office of the Township Clerk at
the address printed below and has been posted on the Township’s website at https://www.pennfieldmi.gov/. A summary of provisions
contained in the proposed Zoning Ordinance amendments are as follows:


  • Section I. Purpose and Intent. This section establishes that the purpose of the Battery Energy Storage Systems (“BESS”) is to
    provide for regulations for the construction, setback standards; lot coverage; maximum height limitations; operation and de-
    commissioning.

  • Section II. Purpose Amendments to Article 6. This section amends Article 6 of the Township Zoning Ordinance to add new
    sub-section 6, titled “Battery Energy Storage System” that provides for definitions of terms used in the ordinance; regulations for
    Off-Site BESS; operational plans; decommissioning and removal standards; special land use permit and site plan requirements;
    waiver to standards; building permit information; and, standards for On-Site BESS.

  • Section III. Amendment to Article 3 of the Township Zoning Ordinance. This section amends sub-section 3.9.2 of Article 3
    of the Township Zoning Ordinance to allow On-Site and Off-Site BES as special land uses in the agricultural district zoning
    classification.

  • Section IV. Severability. The provisions of this ordinance are severable.

  • Section V. Repealer and Effective Date. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed. This ordi-
    nance shall take effect 8 days after publication, after adoption, as required by law.
    PENNFIELD CHARTER TOWNSHIP will provide necessary, reasonable auxiliary aids and services such as signers for the hearing
    impaired and audio tapes of printed material being considered at the meeting to individuals with disabilities at the meeting upon four
    (4) days’ notice to the Pennfield Charter Township Clerk. Individuals with disabilities requiring auxiliary aids or services should
