The Blue Devils are headed to the
MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division
2 Girls Golf Finals for the fifth
consecutive season this weekend.
For the first time ever they’ve
already got a mitten shaped trophy as
they make the trip.
Gull Lake won its first ever girls
golf regional championship Tuesday,
Oct. 8, at Bedford Valley Golf
Club. Junior Charlotte Boudeman
shot her way to a regional runner-up
finish individually as the Blue
Devils beat out the runner-up team
from St. Joseph 345-358. Plainwell
was third in the day’s standings with
a score of 372.
The top three teams and top three
individuals not on those teams at
regionals across the state last week
earned spots in the Oct. 18-19
MHSAA L.P. Girls Golf Finals. The
Blue Devils head to the D2 competi-
tion
at The Meadows on the campus
of Grand Valley State University in
Allendale Friday.
Boudeman was in contention for an
individual regional championship all
day too at Bedford Valley, but
ultimately finished one stroke
behind Mattawan senior Charlotte
Stenger’s 77. Thornapple Kellogg
senior
Ailana Leos was third with an 80,
Plainwell sophomore Ayla Jaeger
fourth with an 82 and St. Joseph had
senior Rachel Cox and sophomore
Marley Walters tie Gull Lake sopho-
more Allison Vanhuysen for fifth
with 85s.
Gull Lake also had senior Ella
Schaberg ninth with an 89 and senior
Aubrey Crowley 11th with a 93.
The Gull Lake varsity girls’ golf team celebrates its program’s first ever regional
championship after winning the 18-hole event at Bedford Valley Golf Club
Tuesday, Oct. 8. Team members include coach Jason Coats, Emma Walters,
Allison Vanhuysen, Charlotte Boudeman, Ella Schaberg, Aubrey Crowley and
coach T.R. Walters. The Blue Devils will be back in action this
weekend, Oct. 18-19, at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 2 Girls Golf
Finals at the Meadows on the campus of Grand Valley State University in
Allendale. (Shopper News photo by Brett Bremer)
Blue Devils win their first regional golf title
Stenger, Leos and Stevensville
Lakeshore’s Ella Roberts were the
three individual state qualifiers from
the
regional. Roberts shot a 91. Leos
was right there with Boudeman and
Stenger shooting for an individual
regional title throughout the day.
Stenger shot an even-par-36 on the
back nine (starting her day on 15 and
closing on 14), including an eagle
on the par-4, 330-yard, number 11.
Boudeman shot her lone birdie of the
round there on 11.
Boudeman had a 38 on the back
nine. She was just three over through
her first 15 holes. She started on one
and closed the front nine
with five consecutive pars,
and then started the back
nine par, birdie, par, par,
par,
par before a hiccup on
16 ultimately made keep-
ing up with Stenger tough.
Stevensville Lakeshore
was fourth in the day’s
team standings with a 393
ahead of Mattawan 408,
Thornapple Kellogg 416,
Zeeland East 428, Portage Northern
439, Allendale 442, Zeeland West
450, Niles
486, Wayland 494 and Holland
NTS.
Emma Walters, a sophomore, was
the Blue Devils No. 5 on the day.
She shot a 106.
There won’t be many teams at
The Meadows with more state finals
experience than the Blue Devils.
Boudeman was seventh individual-
ly at the D2 Finals a year ago as the
Blue Devil team that also included
Schaberg, Crowley and Vanhuysen
placed eighth.
Boudeman, Schaberg and Crowley
all shot with the team that was 12th
at the finals in 2022 and this will be
Schaberg&’s fourth appearance at
the finals. She helped the team to a
fifth-place finish as a freshman in
2021.
The Blue Devils were also 11th at
the D2 Finals in 2020.
