Lakeview Assisted Living in Battle
Creek will find almost any reason to
throw a party, but when five residents
are 100 years old (or older), it really
calls for a celebration, says spokes-
person Christine Losinski.
“When we think of celebrating
milestone birthdays, we tend to think
of turning 1, 30, 40, 50, 75, but not
many imagine that they will celebrate
turning 100 years old,” said Losinki.
“If you were to ask any one of the
five centenarians that call Lakeview
home, they would tell you that it was
definitely a surprise to them.”
George Rich (102), Dorothy Misner
(102), Betty Shelton (100), Celia
“Loretta” Strand (100) and Laura
“Janet” Buford (100) are members of
an elite group, Losinski said, adding
that there are less than 30 centenar-
ians in Calhoun County, and less than
84,00 nationwide.
“It’s an incredible honor to know
these amazing individuals,” said Reid
Ganton, administrator at Lakeview
Assisted Living. “They have lived
extraordinary lives and have wit-
nessed so much history. Honestly,
we’re just grateful to be able to sit
and talk with them.”
Rich is a World War II Army vet-
eran and POW.
He was an avid golfer and still
meets with some of his golf buddies
weekly.
Buford was born during the Great
Depression in Tennessee and remem-
bers when her family finally got elec-
tricity on their farm.
Originally from Texas, Misner
helped build B-24s during World
War II and wed her husband, Pete,
a Battle Creek native, in 1943; they
were married 69 years.
Shelton had a long career at
Kellogg, and at one point, she was
the highest paid woman at the com-
pany.
During the war, she won a competi-
tion to become a pin-up girl; the pho-
tos sent to the troops were all signed
“Betty, your blind date.”
Strand has had a passion for music
since she was a child.
Both of her late husbands were Air
National Guardsmen, so they moved
around quite a bit, and singing was
always a constant in her life.
All five residents are featured in
the “Centenarians of Calhoun County
2024,” published by Calhoun County
Senior Services.
